Going back to school as an adult can be a daunting task. Juggling the responsibilities of school and work is a struggle to begin with, now add to that going to class, studying and preparing for tests. It may seem overwhelming at first, but fear not, you are not alone. According to the US Census, about 37% of students were over 25 years old in 2005 and over half of them were in school part time. Here are some suggestions to help you get through school as an adult.

Make sure you have a clear reason for going back to school. Do you want to improve your skills to make more money, get a promotion or make a career change. Be specific and keep that goal in front of you at all times. The next thing to beware of is taking to many classes. Give yourself time to readjust to being a student, start with a manageable number of classes, then progress to more once you are comfortable. Next, you need to manage your time well, so keep a detailed calendar of your daily activities, classes, family obligation and work schedule. Lastly, don’t neglect your family. Get a babysitter once a week and go out with your spouse. Plan time to play with your kids and stick to it. Meet a friend for coffee once or twice a month. These small things will do a lot to lower your stress level and keep you grounded.
